5 Questions Principals Should Ask Before Choosing an After-School Math Program

Schools are under pressure to help students catch up in math, and after-school programs are one of the most common answers. But programs vary a lot. Some are little more than supervised homework time. Others make a measurable difference within a single school year.

After more than 13 years of working with K–12 students, and partnering with schools on enrichment and teacher training, here are the five questions I'd ask before choosing a program.

1. How do you find out what each student is missing?

Students who struggle in math rarely struggle with everything. Most have specific gaps, often from earlier grades, that make today's lessons hard to follow. A strong program starts with a diagnostic look at each student and targets those gaps directly, instead of reteaching the whole curriculum.

2. Do you address confidence and math anxiety?

Many students who are behind have also decided they're "not math people." Some freeze on tests even when they know the material. Content alone won't fix that. Ask how the program builds early wins, reduces anxiety and changes how students see themselves.

3. Is it engaging enough that students want to come?

After a full school day, another hour of worksheets is a hard sell. Attendance drops, and so does impact. Programs built around games, movement and hands-on problems keep students coming back, and engaged students learn more.

4. How will we measure progress?

A good partner should agree on clear goals up front and report on them during the year: skill growth, assessment results, and changes in confidence and classroom performance. If a program can't tell you how it will measure success, that's a warning sign.

5. Will our teachers benefit too?

The most lasting improvements happen when teachers gain new strategies they can use every day. Look for programs that include professional development, so the approach reaches students during the school day, not just after it.

How we partner with schools

Math Accelerator brings our game-based, root-cause approach into schools through after-school enrichment programs and teacher professional development workshops. Students build real confidence, teachers gain practical strategies, and schools see measurable gains in math proficiency.
